A holiday gift

He stood on the corner unkempt. The aged jeans, the worn shirt and the ragged jacket and a little handwritten note that just said Please Help. Homeless and Hungry.
This was a corner that this type of person us hardly ever seen, in a town this is hardly seen. But he was treated like he were on a normal corner...people glanced, tried not to make eye contact, turned their heads, locked their doors, and did anything they could to avoid trying to notice him until the light turned green.
Then out of nowhere and very unexpectedly, two youngsters...probably college or high school aged 18-20 year olds ran across the street. A young couple that looked in love. At first the old man was a bi startled. Then they approached him. He looked at them cautiously, and they just had a true smile on their face. You could tell they were there because they wanted to be there, not for show, not to be noticed.
And they took out a brand new coat....new gloves....and a winter hat. And they weren't done. They struck up a conversation with the man, he slowly took the items, and they then handed him what looked like a sandwich from McAlister's and then handed him some money, not sure how much.
The man still had a nervous smile as he put the money in his pocket and looked over the other items.
And as soon as that they were off.
By now there was no longer people looking for any distraction, there was instead an audience trying to get a better look.
No doubt a lot of the people probably thought, those kids were too naïve to know that they just handed their money to a con artist. Some probably thought they wish they could be like that, and other just enjoyed the moment of a little Christmas cheer.
I don't know if the man was really in need. In today's economy it's certainly very possible, despite the fact this is an area that hasn't been hit yet by the economy downturn.
But that doesn't matter much. There is a true Christmas story there.. We celebrate Christmas because we are celebrating the birth of Christ, God's give to the world. A gift unconditional on who we are.
That's the spirit these kids worked in.
And that's the spirit these kids gave in, they didn't ask if the man was real, they didn't care. They gave an unconditional gift.
Enjoy the holidays. And remember to help others when you can.
