A state of festivals
May 14th 2008 08:00
Texans love festivals. On any given weekend, if you can't find a festival of some sort going on in the state, you ain't looking. Mind you, even if you live in Texas, many of the festivals won't be close to you (It's about 800 miles (1280 kilometers) from opposite ends of the state....but I'll save the size of Texas for a different day) I just looked on tourtexas.com and this weekend there are at least 13 festivals going on.
Most festivals are just a good way to have a nice street party. There's really a lot to explore and do too. Find original art, make unique trade, listen to music, and of course....eat.
March 23-24 is one of the best festivals for that with the Fredericksburg Crawfish Festival. It's not exactly traditional Texas fare, but most of us have come to embrace this delicacy from our neighbors in Louisiana, and some red beans and rice...yummy. If you're unfamiliar with crawfish, here's a good example of what it's all about crawfish boil.
Plus if you get to feeling too Cajun there, the next day you can just drive up the road to Llano and go to the Texas Proud festival and get a taste of the old west and Texas roots, celebrating chuck wagons, gunfighters and the like.
But that may be a bit much...so instead you can try the best in Texas and Chili festival in Bandera, whish "celebrates all things that make Texas great" .... mainly cookoffs.
While there's lots else to see and do in Texas, if you ever find yourself in the state and hear about a festival, embrace it. You will often find out more about Texas, and get some of the best Texas cooking, if you go.
