Big 12

In the big scope of things, what conference Texas, Texas A&M, and all the other school are in doesn't matter much. But it sure is good to still have the Big 12.
An extra large Pac 10 really made no sense. Even though as it is now you don't really get a sense of a true Missouri-Texas rivalry, it would be even harder to imagine a Texas-Washington State rivalry.
Money and prestige are the driving forces behind conference wanting to expand, and universities wanting to go, but the Texas schools did the right thing by not going. The big focus has been on football and the potential revenue from that sport alone, but the presidents and regents of the schools had to look at all things, and when they did it became clear that Texas in the Pac 10 doesn't make sense. When you play football it's usually a weekend event and students may miss a Friday class, but the other sports often play midweek games and these trips cause plenty of lost school. To make a conference trip that much farther would be insane. A midweek conference basketball game between Texas and Washington State could cost students 2-3 days class time, whereas a conference game between Texas and Mizzou may just be one day. It hurts the athlete way too much.
Texas Musings would like to eventually see a Texas Conference again. The Big 4 (Texas, A&M, Tech and Baylor) can stay logically in the Big 12 (people like to decry Baylor as belonging in the Big 12, mainly because of their mediocre football team. But Baylor has the third most Big 12 titles in all sports, and that's impressive enough to keep them a solid Big 12 mainstay),
But there are enough other schools in Texas that a decent Texas conference can be formed and be competitive on the grand scale. TCU, SMU, Houston, Rice, North Texas, Texas-El Paso in the current football state, plus a couple more on the way, then a handful more in the other sports makes it a possibility in the future.
