Hello Hurricane Ike
September 10th 2008 06:52
This may seem odd, but I absolutely love hurricanes. They fascinate me.
All of that power, all of that force. It’s a beautiful thing.
Yes they are deadly, yes they are destructive. And I know this first hand. Hurricane Allen destroyed my house in 1980.
But Allen did not destroy me. What I mean by that is that of all of nature’s destructive forces, a hurricane is the one that gives you the most warning. You know pretty much days in advance where it’s going to hit. Tornadoes and earthquakes and even tsunami give little warning.
I’ve lived through several hurricanes, and now that I’ve lived off the coast for years, I kind of miss them. So in a morbid way I’m kind of looking forward to Ike, because it’s supposed to still be at minimum a tropical storm when it hits me up here in Central Texas, but the latest projections have it at a Level 1 hurricane. That’s pretty impressive this far in.
I don’t make light of the damage and death caused by such beasts as Katrina, Andrew, Celia, Beulah, etc.. because I know how powerful these things are. But knowing that we can’t stop them from coming (someone want to work on that), I’ve just learned to enjoy them.
Still, I hope everyone stays safe and Ike isn’t a deadly beast when it hits the Texas coast.
