Waco fights back
May 23rd 2008 00:57
After being listed as one of the 10 worst places to raise a family in the United States, Waco officials decided the best thing to do was to ignore the news.
Waco chamber of conference chief Jim Vaughn admitted to the Waco Tribune-Herald newspaper that had "Best Life" magazine ranked Waco as a top city, then they'd use it in propaganda promoting the city. But since it was ranked in the bottom 10, they will just ignore it, stating lists are arbitrary.
True. In fact, in 2005 Money Magazine named Hewitt the 44th best place to live in the U.S.A. Hewitt is a suburb of Waco and the officials there said that what made Hewitt great was being an extension on Waco. Waco was ranked the 4th best city in Inc. magazine in 2004.
Strangely though, reading some user comments on the Waco Tribune-Herald's websites kind of gives the indication that many Waco residents don't really have an issue with the Best Life bottom 10 ranking.
Yeah, we have some bad places to live in Texas and I'd agree that Waco wouldn't be so high on my list of places to live, but again, there were lots of Texas cities on that list that the magazine said were good places to live. And heck, Texas is one of the fastest growing states and has three cities in the top ten population wise in the U.S., so we must be doing something right.
And as for the Best Life article. Most of the news stories and comments on those stories from various news stories wondered the same thing...What is Best Life magazine anyway?
